Vinegar Shrubs - Drink Your Fruit!

Date Posted:22 January 2019

Shrubs, also known as drinking vinegars, derive from the original methods of fruit preservation in colonial era U.S. They have now been reinvented to offer lively combinations of intense fruit essence and tart acidity. A Shrub is a combination of sweet and savoury flavours: vinegars, sugar and fruits, aromatics and tart essences, in a concentrated syrup.

Why vinegar? Vinegar provides a distinct tangy bite that balances perfectly with the sweetness of fresh fruit. Vinegar works much like citrus in your drinks – it quenches thirst, cleanses the palate and is very refreshing.

Recipes and methods for making shrubs vary, but the result is always a delicious liquid that captures the essence of fresh fruit – to be enjoyed in any season.

Nutritional experts also tell us that drinking vinegars aid digestion and have other health benefits. And there are so many ways to enjoy them. Use them when you require a sour element to your cocktails or make delicious, unique, non-alcoholic drinks, by pouring 30-45ml of your favourite Shrub in a tall glass with ice and topping with soda water. You can even add other juices or fruits for even more fruitiness!

Or add them as an ingredient to your dressings and marinades - or use with ice cream and desserts. Be creative!
