Country of origin:   Italy        Alcohol content: 20% Alcohol by Volume

The term ’Sfumato’ derives from the Italian word for smoke — ‘fumo’. It is traditionally associated with a style of Renaissance painting characterised by subtle transitions between areas of dark and light. This speaks directly to the profile of this amaro, which marries a dark smokiness with nuanced bitter woodsiness from alpine herbs and notes of sweet alpine berries.

Like most amari, Sfumato is made by macerating a proprietary mixture of herbs and botanicals in neutral spirit. But as a card-carrying member of the larger group of rabarbaro (“rhubarb”) amari, it’s Chinese rhubarb that gives it distinctive smoky character.

The smoky nose in this amaro gives gives way to woody and tobacco notes that finish with a robust fruity and liquorice bittersweetness.

Pairs well with smoky food or drink, or to add a touch of bittersweet smokyness where you think it's needed. Other pairing suggestions: Bourbon, Rye.

About Antica Erboristeria Cappelletti:

Founded in 1909 by Giuseppe Cappelletti with the aim of providing natural herbal remedies to the people of Trentino, Cappelletti grew in the 1920s to produce Elisir Novasalus—a wine based infusion of herbs, spices, roots, and flowers. This proved popular and other liqueurs were added to the range, along with grappa. Cappelletti is family owned and run, as it has been for four generations.
