A bittersweet amaro, with roots dating back to 1873. Amaro Ciociaro is rich in herbs and spices such as gentian, cloves and kola, with the zest of a lemon and a touch of smoke—complementing its strong bitter orange characteristics. It is commonly used as a substitute for Picon Amer in regions where it is difficult to find.
Try it in a Brooklyn as a substitute for the classic Amer Picon, or as an addittion to a sparkling wine or dry cider to add a splash of orange. Alternatively it would provide a delightful citrusy twist on a classic amaro sour.
The Ciociaria region of Italy was were the Paolucci family began producing this bitter liqueur in 1873. The name CioCiaro refers to a traditional type of sandal, the “ciocia”, which you can see worn by the woman on the label.
